Dogwood Alliance Materials from the Center for Retail Excellence Conference in Bentonville, AR on September 4, 2008.
Every business uses paper, it is a universal product. As the corporate world considers the "environmental footprint" of its paper choices, visibility as to the ultimate source of your paper's fiber and transparency regarding the environmental impacts of your choices is critical.
As you move forward with your internal sustainability goals and objectives, your efforts can not only create the expectation for more environmentally responsible pulp, paper and wood from your suppliers but if you act strategically can work to drive more responsible forestry practices and forest protection on the ground in the woods around the globe and in the Southern US.
The following materials serve to illustrate how Dogwood Alliance works to harness the market power of your sustainability efforts to create real and lasting forest protection.
“Understories” Summer 2008 Newsletter
The latest of our quarterly “Understories” newsletter reports on our ongoing No Free Refills fast food packaging reform campaign as well as our work in support of Domini Social Investments shareholder resolution at the International Paper annual general meeting regarding improved forestry practices.
Green Grades
The Green Grades report card evaluates the leading office supply companies on five categories crucial to forest protection: post-consumer recycled content; sustainable forest management; Endangered Forest protection; establishing chain-of-custody to determine origin of paper products; and prohibiting the conversion of native forests into tree farms or other non-forest land uses.
Bowater Report
Our report, “Southern Forests & Bowater, Inc.: Progress Report” details the leap forward Bowater (now AbitibiBowater) made in honoring its commitment to improve forestry practices in the Southern US and in protecting forests of ecological significance on the Cumberland Plateau of Eastern Kentucky, Central Tennessee and Northern Alabama.

SFI Standards Analysis
Description:
The timber industry’s trade association, the American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA), created a certification scheme, the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). The SFI released its new certification standards at the beginning of 2005.
While the revised SFI standards and procedures include some small improvements many of these changes fail to require concrete on-the-ground outcomes. Ultimately, it will take far more fundamental changes for the SFI to be credible and effective as a certification system for environmentally, socially, and economically well-
managed forests.
This fact sheet provides a brief analysis of the new SFI standards.

Why Packaging?
Description:
In 2004, more than half of all the paper produced in the United States was used in paper packaging. In other words, more than half of all of the trees, forests, and habitat cut down, chipped up, and pulped became not products, but packaging holding the products consumed in our modern American lifestyle. Overall, paper is the most frequently used packaging material at 34% of the total packaging industry, with plastic packaging second at 30%. Because the Southern U.S. remains the largest paper producing region in the world, and more than half of all paper production goes to paper packaging, our society’s decisions about packaging directly impact Southern forests.

Dogwood Alliance Statement on Domini Resolution: IP & Global Warming
Description:
At this year's International Paper AGM, Domini Social Investments filed a shareholder resolution asking the company to take action on global warming in their supply chain. This statement supports the resolution and provides reasons why this is the responsible thing to do and crucial to the protection of Southern forests as a vital resource to address the issue of global warming. IP and printing company RR Donnelley were the only two companies to fail to take action on this resolution forcing the issue to go to the floor for a vote. Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy and MeadWestvaco all took significant action which allowed Domini to pull the resolution for those companies. Another example why IP is the laggard of the forest products industry.
